...Involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles can be causing painful intercourse.
Vaginisus, Involuntary Tightening of the Vagina
The vagina has a sphincter, a
grouping of muscles that control its tightness. This sphincter
relaxes to allow childbirth, medical examination, the insertion of
tampons and most importantly sexual penetration. When the sphincter
clenches and prevents all forms of penetration the condition is
called Vaginismus.
Vaginismus is cause for some very
painful intercourse. Self-examination is a first step to diagnosis.
Women are recommended to self-palpitate themselves by placing
fingers into the vagina to check tightness, if it feels unusually
tight or are unable to penetrate the vagina it may signify
Vaginismus. If the problem persists and the vagina seems unable to
relax then the woman should check with her physician about the
problem. As always if you have health concerns, check with your
physician.
Most Vaginismus is temporary,
caused by situational or psychological factors. Stress and lack of
foreplay might be two of the largest cases. Foreplay is a major
factor in relaxing and preparing both parties for intercourse. When
women find themselves to tight to accept the penis, they should not
become anxious for it will only add to the dilemma. One method to
relieve the temporary constriction is to take a deep breath and
relax as much as possible. Some suggest warm packs or relaxing baths.
If you are completely comfortable with your partner, humor is a good
means to relax. Gentle vaginal massage, brings blood flow to the
area and adds to arousal, which leads to relaxation. Having an
orgasm from cunnilingus before intercourse is also a wonderful and
enjoyable way to relax those muscles.
Rarely, women will experience
constant or recurring Vaginismus. For these women simple techniques
may not relieve their discomfort and they must go see a physician.
The physician will check medical history and perform an exam. The
doctor will also have to review all sexual history looking for a
psychological trauma. Possible factors could be abuse, rape, painful
first intercourse, or even simple fears.
The important thing to note,
whether your Vaginismus is of the temporary or permanent sort, it is
usually curable. By being aware of your problem and understanding it
you are increasing your chances of easier vaginal penetration.
