What is cryotherapy? Is cryotherapy painful? How long does cryotherapy take?
INFORMATION FOR
PATIENTS HAVING CRYOTHERAPY
What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a freezing procedure done to destroy the abnormal areas
of your cervix discovered by colposcopic examination. The frozen tissue will
shed off and new healthy tissue will grow in its place.
Is cryotherapy painful?
You may experience some moderate to severe menstrual-like cramps during
the freezing procedure. No anesthesia is required. You may wish to take some
pain medicine (Motrin-800mg or Advil-4 tablets) with food about one hour before
your appointment.
You may become dizzy and flushed immediately following the freezing procedure.
This is a normal reaction. Don't become alarmed. Lie down and relax until this
reaction has passed.
How long does cryotherapy take?
Cryotherapy takes only about 15-20 minutes and will involve only the
affected area.
What can I expect after cryotherapy?
A few hours after the freezing, you will notice a heavy, watery
discharge from your vagina. This discharge may last approximately two to three
weeks. Should it persist for a longer period or become bloody, or a yellow-brown
color, call the Women's Clinic (706 542-8691 or 706 542-1162) for further
instructions.
Are there any instructions for care following cryotherapy?
You can carry on your normal activities; however, you should avoid
intercourse, tampons or douching for at least two weeks, during the period of
heavy, watery discharge. The cervix is undergoing a healing process. Irritation
to this area should be avoided, as bleeding may occur. During the time of the
excess fluid from your vagina, increase your water intake. In addition, replace
possible potassium loss from your body by drinking a glass or two of orange
juice a day or eat a banana daily . . . or both.
When will I need another pap smear?
It is important for you to get a repeat pap smear within four to six
months from the time of cryotherapy. If it is normal, as expected, get a repeat
pap smear again in six months.
